Ethan Allen Jacobean-Style Oak Slant-Front Desk on Turned-Baluster Base
An Ethan Allen slant-front writing desk in the Jacobean Revival taste, built in solid oak with strong quarter-figured grain across the fall front and drawer faces. The hinged lid drops to a felt-free oak writing surface and reveals a fitted interior: paired pigeonholes with shaped dividers, lower open compartments, and a central hinged door with a shaped panel concealing additional storage measuring roughly 8½" × 8". Below the fall are two short dovetailed drawers over one long drawer, all fitted with steel-and-brass shaped teardrop pulls on pierced backplates. A diamond-form brass escutcheon centers the lid.
The desk stands on a distinct base of heavy turned-baluster legs joined by an H-form stretcher, with carved scallop-shaped aprons running the front and sides. The reverse is stamped in ink FG-9003 / No. 220 / 30/7/79, and the interior bears the burned Ethan Allen maker's mark. A production line rooted in English 17th-century cabinet forms, executed for the mid-century American home.
CONDITION
Good. Age-appropriate finish wear and loss throughout, with a stable split to the left side and light scratching to the top surface. Drawers run on dovetailed construction and operate smoothly; the fall front and interior door function properly. Key included.
