Chippendale Carved Mahogany Curved-Back Settee, Leather Seat
A two-seat settee in the Chippendale taste, built in solid mahogany with a boldly serpentine crest carved with acacia-leaf plumes, scrolled ends, and blind-fret arcading above three pierced interlaced splats. Turned baluster stiles divide the back, sweeping into scrolled arm terminals over ring-turned column supports. The curved seat is upholstered in brown leather with a full brass nailhead trim running the perimeter.
The base stands on square molded legs joined by beaded H- and X-form stretchers, with the same beaded edge repeated on the front legs. The underside retains its traditional interwoven jute web foundation over the frame. A gracious, sociable form suited to a hall or foyer where its curved back and open splatwork read from every angle.
CONDITION
Fair and sturdy. The frame is solid and stable throughout with age-appropriate wear to the finish. The leather seat is heavily worn, with multiple tears, splits, and stains across the surface — several exposing the pale substrate beneath — along with ring marks and general crazing. Nailhead trim is intact.
