A Louis XV-style kneehole writing desk in the bureau plat tradition, its serpentine top laid in bookmatched and quartered crotch mahogany veneer that reads as two mirrored fans of flame figure across the surface. The frieze holds three drawers — a divided center drawer flanked by two — while each pedestal carries a bank of two drawers, seven dovetail-jointed drawers in total. Drawer fronts are figured mahogany veneer with ebonized cockbead reserves; the center frieze retains its painted floral spray. Frame, cabriole legs, reeded pilasters, and acanthus-scroll cartouches are carved and finished in 22k oil gilt on wood. The brass bail and rosette pulls are finished in 23k oil gilt.

What separates this desk from the gold-painted revival examples that flood the market is the material honesty underneath: genuine oil gilding over carved wood rather than bronze paint, and a French polish surface — a labor-intensive shellac finish rarely committed to production furniture of this era. Good overall. Light scratches throughout the French-polished surfaces, with past repairs to the top and areas of finish wear and loss. The gilt legs show small chips and flaking to the gesso at the feet and carved cartouches, with scattered rubbing to high points. All seven drawers are present and dovetailed; the case is solid.
