Tapio Wirkkala Iittala Ultima Thule Footed Crystal Centerpiece Bowl, 14"

Designed by Finnish master Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala, this large footed centerpiece from the Ultima Thule line is mold-pressed clear crystal in the pattern Wirkkala introduced in 1968. The surface does the work: radiating linear striations run the rim and sidewall while scattered bubble-dome relief pools across the interior, a deliberate replication of melting ice on the Lappish tundra. At 14" in diameter and just under 6 pounds, it reads as sculpture as much as serving piece. The original Iittala red oval label remains intact on the rim.

Ultima Thule was created for Finnair's first-class service and debuted at the 1968 Cologne furniture fair, going on to become one of the most recognizable Scandinavian glass designs of the century. Wirkkala (1915–1985) developed the ice texture through carved graphite molds, and the pattern remains in production today — but the large footed centerpiece is among the most displayable forms in the range, holding fruit, floating candles, or standing alone as a table centerpiece.
