Tonalá Burnished Earthenware Quail Figure, Hand-Painted Mexican Folk Art
A rounded, hollow-bodied quail modeled in the burnished earthenware tradition of Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. The plump gourd-like form sits low and full, with a crested head turned to one side and a short beak resolving the sculptural silhouette. The surface carries the region's characteristic warm ochre ground, hand-painted with sweeping tail and wing feathers in iron red and cream, a bold ringed eye, and scrolling floral and foliate motifs across the flank. Fine incised and brushed line-work outlines each feather.
CONDITION
Very Good, no remarkable damage. Paint and burnished surface remain strong with age-appropriate mellowing to the ground. The interior shows firing lines and minor stabilized crazing typical of the hollow-formed body; no restoration noted.
