Louis XV Style Kingwood Parquetry Marble-Top Buffet, Marked

A handsome Louis XV taste buffet in figured kingwood parquetry veneer, the breakfront case fitted with six drawers in two flanking banks and a central lockable cupboard, the whole surmounted by a molded-edge rouge marble top. Each drawer front carries a diamond and chevron veneer panel within a cross-banded molded frame, while the central door presents a shaped, cartouche-form raised panel with original brass escutcheon and knob hardware. The case stands on carved cabriole legs with acanthus-scroll knees and scrolled toes above a continuous scalloped apron — a vocabulary firmly rooted in the Louis XV idiom that dominated provincial French cabinet-making from the mid-18th century through the early 19th. Construction throughout is traditional: hand-cut dovetail drawer boxes, a pine secondary-wood back and interior carcass, and a single removable shelf in the cupboard cavity.

The rich rouge marble — displaying grey, cream, and ochre veining with natural fossil inclusions consistent with French Languedoc-type stone — has been professionally repaired along a full-length break and reads well from above.

History

The Louis XV style in French provincial furniture is a long-lived tradition. While the court style peaked under Louis XV (r. 1715–1774), its vocabulary — the cabriole leg, the shaped cartouche, the serpentine apron, the parquetry veneer in exotic woods — was adopted widely by regional ateliers across France and remained in continuous production through the Empire and Restoration periods. Kingwood (bois de rose violet), a dense Brazilian rosewood prized for its tight figure and warm violet-brown tones, was a favored parquetry material in French provincial work throughout this span. Breakfront buffets of this form — sometimes called an enfilade or buffet bas — served as the principal storage and display furniture of the French dining room, a role they filled from the reign of Louis XIV onward. The pine secondary wood and hand-cut dovetails are consistent with atelier production of the 18th–early 19th century; the quality of the carving on the legs suggests a skilled shop rather than purely rural work.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear throughout and evidence of previous restoration. The rouge marble top carries a full-length break that has been professionally repaired and filled; the front molded edge shows chips and losses at several points. Veneer presents scattered lifting, small chips, and a vertical split to one side panel; one drawer front has an old hairline crack. Carved leg surfaces show finish loss and small material losses at one scrolled toe, with a separation at the leg-to-apron joint on one front leg. All six drawers slide and the cupboard door opens and closes.
