American "Seven Sisters" Hand-Pieced Quilt, Red White &Blue Stars, c.1880–1920
An American pieced cotton quilt worked in the Seven Sisters variant pattern, hand-pieced and hand-quilted throughout. Each medallion clusters eight-pointed stars in navy printed cotton — a small white star-and-dot ground — around a central star, set on a cream cotton field and punctuated by red accent circles worked as yo-yo or button-style centers. The high-contrast red, white, and blue colorway gives the piece a graphic, patriotic rhythm across its full surface.
The patriotic palette is a recurring thread in American quilting, popular from the post-Civil War years through the early twentieth century. The navy print reads as period shirting or dress goods, and the red accents are consistent with turkey red or early synthetic-dye cotton of the 1880–1920 window. Dense hand quilting covers the cream ground and carries through to the reverse — confirming the labor investment behind traditional construction. No maker's marks or labels are present.
CONDITION
Fair with age-appropriate wear throughout. Some discoloration and light soiling across the cream ground. Hand-piecing and hand-quilting remain intact.
