J. Chirunga Shona Serpentine Bust with Two Companion Head Carvings, Set of 3

A trio of hand-carved Zimbabwean Shona stone busts, each worked from a single solid block of serpentine. The largest is a black-stone bust of a man with a beaded headband and neck ornament, the polished dark surface contrasting against the rough, granular crown left in its natural pebbled state — a hallmark of the Shona carving tradition, where highlighted texture plays against burnished form. It is signed J. Chirunga along the lower back of the shoulder. The two smaller heads are carved from lighter mottled serpentine, each finished with the same distinctive stippled hairline and a polished facial plane.

Shona sculpture emerged from Zimbabwe in the mid-twentieth century and became one of the most recognized stone-carving movements of the modern era, prized for its balance of raw and refined surface. The three pieces here read as a matched grouping in scale and treatment, the darkest anchoring the set and the two paler busts stepping down in size. All three are carved fully in the round.

CONDITION

Fair overall. Surface scratching throughout all three pieces, most notable on the two lighter busts. The smallest bust has a chip with repair to the lower right side; a stress crack runs through the neck-to-shoulder area of one of the lighter heads. The signed black bust retains the strongest polish and surface.
