Cushman Colonial "Spiced Birch" Welsh Dresser & Glazed Hutch, Model 2237C

There is a particular kind of furniture that doesn't announce itself — it simply presides. This two-piece Welsh dresser by Cushman Colonial is that kind of piece. The upper hutch rises behind a boldly projected cornice with a hand-cut dentil course, flanking a pair of nine-pane glazed display doors hung with pierced brass bail pulls. Between the doors, an open plate rack with a shaped scalloped valance steps back against a planked vertical backboard — the kind of architectural interior detail that separates a furniture maker from a case-goods factory. Six adjustable shelves run the full width of the glazed bays, deep enough for serious display. The lower dresser base is just as deliberate: two dovetailed, velvet-lined drawers fitted with period-correct pierced batwing bail pulls and escutcheon backplates, sitting above four bold raised-panel cupboard doors with turned brass knobs. A molded bracket-foot base with shaped returns completes the silhouette. All of it in solid birch, in Cushman's warm Spiced Birch finish — a honey-amber tone the company achieved through careful staining and hand-rubbing that deepens rather than obscures the grain.

The construction tells you what the finish only hints at. Cushman built its Vermont case goods to outlast the house they went into. The drawers are cut with hand-fit dovetails — not the machine-routed uniform pins of production furniture, but the slightly variable pitch of a craftsman's saw. The glazed doors carry hand-fit glass panes with the gentle ripple and seed character of period-appropriate manufacture; the replacement pane in the left-side lower panel is a cosmetic note, not a structural one. The back panels of both sections are stenciled "Cushman Colonial," "SPICED BIRCH," and 2237C, with the cast brass maker's oval affixed to the interior — the company's mark of traceability in an era when Vermont furniture makers were proud of what they signed.

Cushman Colonial was founded in 1933 in North Bennington, Vermont, at a moment when the colonial revival movement was reshaping American domestic taste. H.T. Cushman Manufacturing had been producing bent-willow and wicker furniture since the 1890s, but the colonial line — solid hardwood casegoods modeled on 17th- and 18th-century American forms — became the company's signature through the mid-20th century. Operating under the General Interiors banner by the postwar period, Cushman maintained domestic production in Vermont using local hardwoods — primarily birch and maple — finished in a range of named stains like Spiced Birch, Nutmeg, and Old Tavern. The Welsh dresser and plate-rail forms were among the most ambitious pieces in the line, designed to anchor a dining room the way a good piece of antique furniture would: with weight, proportion, and the authority of well-made wood. Cushman pieces have been collected alongside genuine American colonial antiques since at least the 1970s, and the company's commitment to solid-wood, dovetailed construction gives them an honest claim to that company.

CONDITION

Very Good overall. The bottom half of the left-side glazed panel has been previously replaced; the replacement is secure and does not affect function. Finish and hardware present well with light surface wear consistent with age and use; drawers run smoothly and all shelving is adjustable and structurally sound.
