Description

Attributed to Gustav Stickley – Mission Oak Fall-Front Desk, Paneled Back

A substantial early 20th-century Mission-style fall-front desk, attributed to Gustav Stickley, crafted in richly figured quartersawn oak with a paneled back and pegged joinery. The design reflects hallmark Stickley characteristics, including rectilinear geometry, functional compartmentalization, and honest craftsmanship.

The drop front opens to reveal ten interior compartments and a central drawer, while the lower section offers three dovetailed drawers and two storage cabinets (each approx. 11" x 16.5"). A cast iron escutcheon remains, though no key is present. The paneled back suggests the desk was intended for open placement, not wall mounting.

While unmarked, the build and layout strongly align with known Gustav Stickley designs. Notable comparisons include:

This piece is well-suited for collectors, restorers, or as a functional accent in a traditional interior.

Condition

Good overall condition with expected wear from age and use. Finish shows scuffing, scratches, ink staining, and surface dulling. One interior trim element is chipped. Evidence of a prior repair to the writing surface is visible, and an old structural split on the front panel was previously restored. Some hardware (including screws) appears to be more recent replacements. Displays well and retains its integrity, but would benefit from light restoration. No key is included.

Dimensions
