Description

Pair of Monumental .750 Silver Altar Candlesticks — German, Signed, 19th C.

A grand and finely detailed pair of 19th-century candlesticks marked .750 silver (12 Loth standard), a silver purity historically used in Germany and Central Europe prior to 1888. These substantial works are rendered in high Rococo Revival style, with bold botanical forms, scrolling foliage, and fruit garlands—crafted in deep repoussé and chased relief. The three-lobed bases rise into columnar stems adorned with sculpted acanthus and shellwork motifs, all showing excellent definition and period craftsmanship.

Seven names are engraved on each base—Scheling, Schutemann, Simpson, Rousselle, Kruspe, Hubert, and Trose—likely commemorating donors, patrons, or honorees associated with a formal commission. Though lacking overt religious symbols, the scale and design indicate likely use in a ceremonial or institutional setting, possibly ecclesiastical or fraternal.

Marked ".750" on the underside, these pieces predate the German hallmark standardization of 1888 and are excellent examples of mid-19th-century Continental silverwork. The combination of repoussé decoration, engraved names, and historical silver purity mark points to a high-quality, likely custom commission.

Condition:

In good condition with light surface wear and patina consistent with age. Minor dings and small dents are visible near the base edges, and faint oxidation is present throughout. The silver retains a rich, aged finish and has not been polished. All detailing and inscriptions remain sharp and well-defined.

Dimensions:

Holds candles up to 4.5 inches in diameter
Approx. 8.5 x 6 x 6 inches
Weight (each): 2 lbs 15.6 oz (weighted construction)

A rare pair of 19th-century .750 silver candlesticks with richly cast ornamentation and commemorative engravings, representing a significant example of German silverwork prior to hallmark standardization.

An ideal acquisition for collectors of antique silver, European decorative arts, or ceremonial design.
