Description

Renaissance Revival Savonarola Armchair – Griffins, Lions, Crown Crest, c.1900

A striking example of late 19th to early 20th century craftsmanship, this Renaissance Revival Savonarola-style armchair is a masterwork of ornamental woodworking. Inspired by curule seats of ancient Rome and revived during the Italian Renaissance, this imposing piece is meticulously carved in solid mahogany. The chair’s grand back features a pierced and sculptural crest depicting two facing winged griffins in high relief—symbols of vigilance and nobility—flanking a crowned cartouche medallion.

The arms terminate in boldly carved lion heads with expressive features, continuing the theme of power and guardianship. Scrolling acanthus leaves flow along the upper stiles and arms, leading the eye to the graceful X-form base. The legs terminate in detailed lion paw feet, a classical design element that reinforces the chair’s visual strength and historical gravity.

Beneath the crest rail, vertical slats form the seat back and sides, curving outward in the typical Savonarola profile. The red leather upholstered seat provides a rich contrast to the deep tone of the wood, enhancing the throne-like presence of the piece. This chair was likely produced circa 1890–1910 in either Italy or the United States during the height of the Renaissance Revival period.

Whether placed in a grand hallway, study, or gallery, this chair exudes stately presence and Old World sophistication. It serves as both a functional seat and a sculptural object of art, ideal for collectors of antique European or revivalist furnishings.

Condition:
Good overall condition with expected age-related wear. Structurally sturdy and sound. There is visible finish wear, surface scratches, and minor scuffing consistent with age and use. One chip is noted on the wood along the right side of the chair (see photos). Upholstery is intact with visible signs of wear.
