Description

Zapotec Wool Wall Hanging — 49 ½" × 86" with Custom Zia Creations Wood Hanger

A striking example of traditional Zapotec handweaving from Oaxaca, Mexico, this large-scale wall hanging (49 ½" H × 86" W) is crafted in 100% wool. The intricate design features bold geometric diamonds in vibrant reds, greens, blacks, and golds, set against a rich orange background and framed by stylized zigzag “flame” borders—classic motifs in Zapotec textiles that carry deep cultural symbolism.

The piece is paired with a custom 80-inch wooden wall hanger made by Zia Creations of New Mexico. Known for their quality craftsmanship, Zia Creations produces functional yet artistic display hangers from locally sourced hardwoods, designed to securely hold textiles without piercing the fabric. The natural wood finish adds warmth and complements the vibrant colors of the weaving, making the entire piece ready for prominent display.

Condition

  • Weaving: Good condition, with vibrant colors and an intact weave. No visible damage.
  • Hanger: Secure, well-crafted, and in excellent working order.

Dimensions

  • Textile: 49 ½" high × 86" wide
  • Wood Hanger: Approximately 80" wide

Zapotec weavings are celebrated for their bold patterns and symbolic depth. Diamond motifs often represent the four cardinal points, cycles of life, or cosmic energy, while zigzag elements can signify mountains or lightning—symbols of power and renewal. These textiles are traditionally woven on pedal looms using hand-dyed wool, a craft passed down through generations in Oaxacan weaving communities.
