Description

Two Grey Hills Navajo Rug, Natural Wool Palette, 25.5 x 38.5 in

A finely handwoven Two Grey Hills rug from the Toadlena/Two Grey Hills region of the Navajo Nation, executed in the classic natural-wool palette of rich brown, black, ivory, and heathered grey. The design features a stepped central diamond medallion framed by serrated borders, with terraced corner motifs that echo the center in perfect symmetry. This restrained but powerful geometry is framed by multiple borders, each woven with crisp definition, a hallmark of the style. Measuring 25.5 x 38.5 inches, it is a versatile display size—ideal for a wall display or as an accent in a curated textile collection.

Two Grey Hills — History & Significance
Emerging in the late 19th century and refined in the early 20th century by traders such as C.N. Cotton, George Bloomfield, and Ed Davies, Two Grey Hills rugs are celebrated for their undyed, hand-spun wool and exceptional weave quality. The palette comes entirely from the natural colors of the sheep, blended and carded by the weaver for subtle variations in tone. Patterns often center on diamonds, stepped terraces, and serrated motifs, surrounded by multiple borders that require exceptional technical control. Collectors prize these rugs for their fine weave, neutral elegance, and the prestige of the style—considered among the most respected in Navajo weaving.
