Description

Luis F. Hernandez Heritage II Ceramic Vessel — Quetzalcoatl & Tlaloc Motif

This monumental stoneware vessel, Heritage II by Luis F. Hernandez, is a powerful exploration of ancestry and identity. Wheel-thrown and hand-built, it forms part of the artist’s “Heritage” triptych, which draws from his father’s origins in Mexico City and the enduring presence of Aztec culture. Hernandez pairs bold sculptural relief with architectural motifs, combining glossy black glaze over raw stoneware to create striking contrast and depth.

At the heart of this work is a dialogue between Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god, and Tlaloc, the rain deity — figures central to Aztec cosmology and still carved into the pyramids of Teotihuacan. These dual presences embody both balance and tension, evoking themes of creation, destruction, and renewal. For Hernandez, they also speak to personal history, with the pyramids symbolizing his father’s heritage and the vessel itself becoming a container for cultural memory.

With its commanding presence, intricate detail, and layered symbolism, Heritage II transcends function to become a sculptural narrative of identity and belonging. A unique opportunity to acquire an artist’s work that bridges contemporary ceramic practice with the timeless power of Mesoamerican tradition.
