Description

Amador Hotel Antique Giltwood Mirror — Historic Las Cruces Provenance

This antique giltwood mirror offers a direct link to one of Las Cruces’s most storied landmarks, the Amador Hotel. Built in 1866 by entrepreneur Martín Amador, the hotel quickly became the social and civic heart of the growing community. Over the decades, its rooms served as post office, courtroom, gathering hall, and dance venue. Travelers, dignitaries, and local families alike passed through its doors, making it a true crossroads of southern New Mexico life.

The mirror was acquired from Annie Laurie Campbell, whose family managed the hotel during the mid-20th century. Period photographs of the Amador’s interiors show the grand lobby and halls furnished with ornate giltwood mirrors like this one, reflecting the life and energy of the community. A Wandell & Lowe Transfer & Storage Co. tag remains on the reverse, a relic of its mid-century handling. From the private collection of a respected Las Cruces family, this mirror will be accompanied by a Statement of Provenance issued by MVES, underscoring its authenticity.

The Amador Hotel is not just a building—it is a landmark of resilience, culture, and hospitality, a place where the city of Las Cruces itself was shaped. This mirror, with its richly detailed gilt frame and original plate, is more than decoration; it is a tangible reflection of New Mexico’s past, ready to become part of a new chapter in your home.

Condition

Fair overall, with chipping and losses to the cast and gilt plaster ornament, scattered abrasions, and small corner cracks. The original mirror plate shows scratches and wear to the reflective surface, consistent with age. Structurally stable and ready for display; please see photos for details.
