24 Ancestral Puebloan Pottery Sherds – Black-on-White & Plainware
A 24-piece lot of Ancestral Puebloan pottery sherds, dating approximately to the Pueblo II–III period (ca. 900–1300 CE). These fragments represent classic Anasazi black-on-white wares alongside plain utilitarian pieces. The decorated sherds feature bold geometric motifs—zigzags, cross-hatching, and stepped triangles—painted in black mineral pigment over a light slip, echoing the Mesa Verde and Rio Grande traditions of the Four Corners and New Mexico regions. Such designs were central to Puebloan visual expression and often associated with bowls, jars, and serving vessels.
The undecorated fragments in gray, red, and tan pastes likely derive from cooking or storage wares, offering a complementary view of everyday Pueblo life. Together, this group provides a compelling cross-section of Ancestral Puebloan ceramic craftsmanship, making it well-suited for collectors, educational study, or display.
Condition
In good archaeological fragment condition, consistent with age and burial. Surfaces show expected wear, encrustation, and edge losses, though painted designs remain clearly visible on many pieces. No repairs or restorations noted.
