Carved Chinese Camphor Cabinet with Village & Landscape Scenes
A densely carved Chinese export cabinet in the camphor-wood tradition, worked on every visible surface with high-relief scenes of robed figures, scholars, pavilions, willow trees, arched bridges, and pagoda-topped villages set against mountain backdrops. The top frieze drawer presents a continuous narrative panel — figures conversing beside woven baskets, a seated man on a bridge, travelers passing through gnarled pine — while the two cabinet doors each carry a deeply hollowed scene framed by carved prunus and Greek-key borders. The sides continue the program with additional figural vignettes, and the cabinet rises on four boldly carved foo-lion mask feet with stylized hair and ball forms. Brass strap pulls with engraved escutcheons fasten the doors at center.
Behind the locking double doors, the case opens to reveal a stack of four dovetailed drawers with shaped cutout pulls — a configuration typical of mid-20th-century Hong Kong and Canton workshops producing carved camphor and rosewood furniture for Western export markets. The top frieze conceals a fifth long dovetailed drawer with carved handles. A solid-wood case throughout, unmarked, with rich natural color and the unmistakable aromatic signature of camphor. The carving program — folk-narrative figural scenes within architectural landscapes, framed by meander and floral borders — places this within the well-known tradition of finely worked export cabinets from the post-war period.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy overall. Scuffing and visible wear consistent with previous use throughout the case and carved surfaces. The top frieze drawer shows a stable crack in the drawer bottom. Cabinet doors are slightly bowed. Key absent. Heavy. No remarkable damage to the carved panels or feet.
