Antique Chinese Carved Hardwood Pedestal Stand with Pierced Stretcher
A Chinese carved hardwood pedestal stand of square form, the floating panel top set within a molded frame above a waisted apron pierced with rectangular openwork slots and carved with stylized chilong dragon scrollwork on all four sides. Four tall cabriole legs sweep outward in a graceful S-curve, terminating in scrolled feet, and are joined near the base by a pierced lower stretcher of interlocking ruyi-form medallions.
Stands of this form were produced in southern Chinese workshops, particularly Guangdong, for the export and domestic markets from the late Qing dynasty through the Republic period, intended as display platforms for porcelain jardinières, scholar's rocks, or potted plants. The high waist, openwork apron slots, and pierced stretcher are characteristic features of this tradition. The piece is unmarked.
CONDITION
Good and structurally sturdy. There is visible separation along one edge of the top panel where the floating center has shrunk away from the frame — a normal response to age in panel-and-frame construction. Minor surface wear and small finish nicks are scattered throughout, consistent with age and use. No major losses to the carved aprons or pierced stretcher.
