Description

Victorian Walnut Marble-Top Chest of Drawers with Carved Leaf Pulls, c. 1870s

An American Victorian four-drawer chest in solid walnut, dating to the 1870s and finished with a removable beveled Carrara marble top. Each graduated drawer carries a pair of hand-carved walnut leaf pulls flanking a recessed walnut keyhole escutcheon — a restrained interpretation of the Eastlake-influenced cottage style popular in middle-class American homes of the period. The case is built with paneled sides and a paneled board back, and the drawers are joined with hand-cut dovetails visible at the sides.

The reverse bears a bold painted inscription, "A. M. Johnson, Mountain View," identifying an earlier owner and likely place of use. A second pencil inscription inside one drawer reads "Repaired & Refinished for my wife Kathleen 3-9-2012 by Roger C. Blume — Cupertino, California," documenting a restoration episode in the chest's history. Includes the original-style skeleton key with a decorative blue-and-silver tassel.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear and previous restoration. The marble top shows surface staining, light marks, and two small mounting holes. The case has been refinished; drawers operate smoothly on their original runners. Provenance inscriptions on the back boards and inside a drawer are intact.
