Description

Pair of Signed Hand-Turned Claro Walnut Vessels, 1983 & 1984

A pair of hand-turned hollow-form vessels in Claro walnut, each signed, dated, and wood-identified by the maker on the underside. The shorter vessel reads "[maker] / 1983 / Walnut" and presents a classic closed-form jar shape with a rolled rim and a softly rounded shoulder tapering to a compact foot. The taller vessel reads "[maker] / 1984 / Claro Walnut" and takes a more sculptural approach, with an undulating natural-edge rim, irregular voids, and a slender tapered body that follows the original character of the log.

Claro walnut (Juglans hindsii), prized by turners for its dramatic figure, color variation, and burl-prone grain, is shown to advantage in both pieces. The 1983 vessel pulls a sweeping, cloud-like grain pattern around its full circumference, while the 1984 vessel reveals natural fissures and bark inclusions that the turner chose to preserve rather than fill. Both retain a hand-rubbed finish that brings out depth and chatoyance in the wood.

CONDITION

Good overall. The 1983 vessel shows a natural stress crack approximately 3" long that has been stabilized. The 1984 vessel retains its natural-edge rim with original voids and grain checks as part of the turner's intent. Both finishes remain intact with light handling marks consistent with display.
