Ancestral Puebloan Pottery Sherd Collection, 232 Pieces in Coiled Basket
A study collection of 232 pottery sherds representing a cross-section of Ancestral Puebloan traditions. The assemblage spans multiple wares and decorative techniques: black-on-white painted body and rim sherds with geometric line work, black-on-red and polychrome fragments, corrugated utility ware showing the characteristic indented coil construction, plain redware, and smudged blackware. Surface treatments range from finely painted mineral-paint designs to textured exterior coils left visible as both structural and decorative elements.
Sherd collections of this scale are commonly assembled from surface finds across decades of family ownership and serve as reference material for the study of regional pottery types, paste composition, temper, and design grammar. The lot is presented in a Tohono O'odham coiled grass basket.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Sherds show edge weathering, mineral deposits, and surface abrasion consistent with archaeological-context fragments. Basket is in good condition with light handling wear; weave is tight and intact.
