Cast Stone Pan Satyr Playing Pipes on Pedestal, Two-Piece Garden Ornament
A two-piece cast stone garden ornament comprising a crouching Pan figure seated atop a separate ornamental pedestal. The satyr is rendered as a squat, muscular form with an exaggerated horned and foliate headdress — the classical attributes of Pan — raising a set of pan pipes to his lips. Clusters of grapes and vine leaves spill around his haunches and feet, anchoring the iconography firmly in the bacchic garden tradition. The modeling is bold and frontal, designed to read from a distance in an outdoor setting.
The accompanying pedestal is cast in a classical idiom — a stepped square plinth rising to a baluster shaft with relief figural panels depicting standing nudes and putti, capped by a scrolled acanthus-form capital. Both pieces share the same off-white painted surface and the granular, slightly pitted texture characteristic of cast stone intended for outdoor display. The two pieces are unattached and stack freely. Unmarked.
CONDITION
Good overall. General wear consistent with outdoor display, with minor chips to both pieces. Displays well.
