Description

Thomasville "Coy" Burl-Top Round Dining Table & Four Lattice-Back Chairs, 1974

The Thomasville "Coy" collection landed in the mid-1970s squarely at the intersection of two appetites that defined that decade's upper-middle residential market: the enduring American fascination with East Asian furniture forms, and a demand for craftsmanship that read as considered rather than merely expensive. Thomasville answered both. The "Coy" line drew directly from Ming Dynasty furniture — not as pastiche, but as a disciplined reinterpretation of proportions, joinery logic, and surface restraint that Ming cabinetmakers had refined over centuries. Forty years later, that vocabulary reads just as cleanly.

The table top is veneered in richly figured burl and shaped to a quatre-lobed perimeter — four inward curves at the compass points referencing the Chinese ruyi cloud-collar silhouette — bordered by double-incised lines that follow the shaped edge. The top splits at center to accept two included 20" extension leaves, expanding seating capacity well beyond the standard four. The apron is burl-veneered to match and meets four square chamfered legs finished in a deeper contrasting tone. The four side chairs carry the collection's signature element: open lattice-grid backs in a three-column fretwork pattern, gently curved in profile, the stiles extending above the crest rail with small notched cutouts lifted directly from classical Chinese architectural latticework. Seats are fixed in navy blue vinyl with welted edges. Square front legs and gently splayed saber rears complete the Ming reference. This is a set for a buyer who knows what they're looking at — and it will be immediately recognizable to anyone who does.

CONDITION

Good overall with consistent signs of use throughout. Scuffing, light scratches, and chips and dings to wood surfaces and edges; a typo in the original condition notes ("edgesg") has been corrected here. Vinyl seat cushions show creasing and surface wear but remain intact and structurally sound. The two leaf extensions show substantial wear but are functional.
