Palecek-Style British Colonial Bamboo & Rattan Étagère with Leather-Lined Shelves
A substantial four-shelf open étagère in the British Colonial idiom, built from bamboo and rattan with a pagoda-form crown of split-bamboo paneling above a stepped cornice. The frame's signature element is the side galleries — stacked pairs of brass-banded rattan rings set against X-form crossbars, repeating down both sides with a graphic rhythm that gives the piece its architectural presence. Multi-rod corner posts are bound with leather wrap at the joinery points, and the apron breaks into a shaped bracket foot at each corner.
The three working shelves are finished in tooled leather with gilt-embossed border lines forming an X across each surface — a detail more often seen on writing desks and partner's tables, here adapted to display use. The base shelf is laid in close-set split bamboo for a contrasting texture. The form draws from Anglo-Indian campaign furniture and reads as comfortable in a sunroom, library, or coastal interior.
CONDITION
Good overall. The leather shelf surfaces show scratches, scuffs, a chip with loss exposing the substrate at one corner, surface discoloration, and general signs of use throughout. Bamboo frame is sturdy with finish wear, minor splits, and small losses at the foot tips. Structurally solid; four fixed shelves.
