Description

American Classical Empire Flame Mahogany Butler's Chest, c. 1840

An American Classical (Late Empire) period chest of drawers with a concealed butler's desk, executed in book-matched flame mahogany veneer over a softwood and poplar secondary. The upper drawer front is reeded with five horizontal half-round mouldings, below sit three graduated cock-beaded drawers fronted in mirrored crotch mahogany, each bordered by light-wood stringing and fitted with cast brass shell-and-anthemion bail pulls and pressed-brass keyhole escutcheons (one escutcheon absent). Drawer construction is hand-cut dovetail, visible at the sides.

The architectural signature of the form is the pair of bold C-scroll lyre supports flanking the lower case, terminating in scrolled volute feet at the front while plain tapered stiles carry the rear — a vocabulary drawn from Duncan Phyfe's late workshop and widely produced by cabinetmakers from New York through the Ohio Valley in the 1840s. Solid mahogany top, paneled sides, and a multi-board pine back complete the case. No maker's stamp or label is present.

CONDITION

Good overall. Veneer remains intact with strong flame figure throughout; scattered scratches, small chips, and finish nicks consistent with age, including a chip to the lower right edge of the fall-front drawer and minor losses along the scroll supports. One drawer escutcheon is absent; keys are not included. Top shows light surface scratches and small finish blemishes. Drawers run on their original runners and operate.
