Chinoiserie Gold Leaf Four-Panel Lacquer Screen — Koi & Maple / Bamboo Reverse
A four-panel lacquer floor screen with hand-painted decoration on both sides, made in China for the export market. The principal face presents an autumn scene rendered against a luminous gold leaf ground: a gnarled maple branch heavy with russet and ochre leaves arches across the upper register, while five koi — green, orange, and dappled cream — drift through rippling water below among reeds and grasses. The black-lacquered border carries a finely drawn geometric asanoha pattern with floral cartouches at the corners and along the stiles.
The reverse is finished in deep black lacquer with a sparer composition: a stand of bamboo brushed in gold and ochre, leaves scattering across the panels in the literati tradition. Brass capped feet anchor each panel, and brass hinges allow the screen to fold flat or angle freely. The panels are unmarked. A handsome dual-purpose piece — autumn pond on one face, scholar's bamboo on the other — that reads equally well as a room divider, headboard backdrop, or freestanding decorative wall.
CONDITION
Good overall with honest signs of use. Scratches throughout the lacquer surfaces, scuffing, chips, and dents — including more concentrated denting on one panel and staining on one panel. Brass feet and hinges are intact; the screen stands and folds correctly.
