Description

Apollo & Space Program Stamp Collection — Seychelles, Samoa & Vatican Pope Paul VI Covers

A grouping of space-themed philatelic material centered on the American manned lunar program and the Vatican's response to the Space Age. The lot includes a complete Seychelles Apollo XI set (Scott 252–256, mint NH) — five stamps running from the 5-cent "Apollo Launching" through the 2.25-rupee "Earth from Moon," with intervening designs for separation, man on the moon, and the tracking station. Also present is the Samoa I Sisifo pair (Scott 315–316, mint NH), the 7 sene and 20 sene "Samoa Honours U.S. Moon Astronauts" issues depicting a spacesuited astronaut and a parachute splashdown over the Apia/Pago Pago map.

The Vatican material adds the religious dimension. A 1969 commemorative card marks Col. Frank Borman's visit to H.H. Paul VI following the Apollo 8 flight around the Moon, franked with the L.25 Vinculum Caritatis stamp and Vatican City cancel dated 15.2.69. A separate KimCover first-edition cover reproduces Paul VI's speech on the Ranger VII lunar mission, franked with a 5 Lire Posta Aerea Vaticana stamp and bearing the speech text in English on the front and Italian on the reverse with the printed "Paulus PP. VI" facsimile. The grouping ties the era's space achievements to their commemoration across three issuing authorities.

CONDITION

Very Good overall. The Seychelles and Samoa stamps are mint, never hinged with fresh color and intact perforations. The Vatican covers and card show light handling and toning consistent with age; the KimCover reverse shows the speech text printed over the building vignette. Dealer pricing and notations appear in pencil on the mounting cards.
