Description

Italian Leopard-Drape Ottoman/Garden Seat on Faux Bamboo Frame, c. 1960

A sculptural occasional seat — or side table, plant stand, garden accent, take your pick — built entirely as illusion: a glazed terracotta "hide" painted in a hand-applied Hollywood Regency leopard spot motif drapes convincingly over a faux-bamboo lattice base, complete with modeled rope ties at each crossing. The hand-painted pattern runs from deep ochre at the crown to a pale, near-white belly at the draped edges, all finished in a high-gloss glaze that catches light across the sculpted folds. The open base is rendered as lashed bamboo poles in warm yellow and russet, hollow and fully visible through the lattice openings.

This form — a draped-cloth trompe-l'oeil in glazed terracotta over a faux-bamboo stool frame — is a recognized mid-century Italian workshop production type, made for both indoor and outdoor use, at home in a garden loggia as readily as a Hollywood Regency living room. The underside carries an impressed maker's mark reading N170 alongside a small device stamp; consistent with Italian majolica. Circa 1960.

CONDITION

Good. Overall crazing throughout the glaze, consistent with age and the terracotta body. Minor scattered glaze loss. Surface gloss remains strong and the hand-painted leopard pattern is bright and presents very well across all faces.
