Description

Clyde Harwick "Black Rose" Copper Brutalist Torch-Cut Rose Sculpture on Igneous Burl Base — Piece #1

A brutalist torch-cut metal rose by Clyde Harwick, rendered in copper and brass with the molten edges and beaded weld work characteristic of mid-century studio metalwork. The blackened bloom crowns a stem of veined, oxidized leaves whose surfaces shift from brass yellow through rose and verdigris — color earned from the torch, not applied. The whole rises from a craggy igneous rock and burl-wood base, the porous volcanic stone playing rough texture against the precision of the welded foliage.

This is the artist's own piece #1, accompanied by a handwritten Certificate of Originality from Harwick's "Nature's Sculpture" line, inscribed "Black Rose" and made expressly for a Mrs. Norma Allyn. The certificate states the artist personally sculpted, approved, and registered the work. The rose is signed "Ch." Harwick's signed, numbered roses on natural stone are a recognizable thread in American hand-wrought decorative sculpture from the period.

Authenticity

Accompanied by the artist's handwritten Certificate of Originality, signed and identifying the work as registered piece #1, titled "Black Rose," made for Mrs. Norma Allyn. The sculpture itself carries the "Ch" signature.

Provenance
  • Made expressly for Mrs. Norma Allyn

CONDITION

Good. The metalwork shows expected oxidation and color variation across the brass and copper leaves, consistent with age and the torch-finishing process. Welded joints and beaded solder points are intact; the leaves show light bending and surface patination throughout. Volcanic stone base is stable with natural pitting and vesicular texture.
