19th-Century Red-Painted Pine Storage Cupboard, Single Four-Panel Door
Country cabinetmakers in mid-19th-century America didn't design for posterity — they built for the kitchen, the buttery, the back hall. This pine storage cupboard is exactly that kind of object: direct, well-proportioned, and honest about what it is. The single door is fitted with four raised panels — two shorter upper panels above two taller lower ones, divided by a central muntin and rail — and hangs in a case topped by a simple molded cornice. A black-painted wood knob serves as the pull; the door is secured by a wood thumb latch. Beneath, the sides extend into tapered cutout bracket feet. The unfinished planked back tells you this piece lived against a wall for most of its life, which is exactly what preserved the front so well.
What sets it apart is the original red paint surface — mottled and sponged across the panels, worn to bare pine at the high edges, and carrying the kind of layered depth that no recreation can reproduce. The interior is divided by two fixed shelves into three open bays, finished dark with age. Collectors working in American country furniture and folk material know what this paint surface represents: it's the thing most often refinished away, and the reason original-surface pieces command the attention they do.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy overall, with age-appropriate wear throughout — scratches, scuffing, and finish loss consistent with long use. The iron hinges have been replaced, and the door knob is loose. Old splits and edge chipping present to the door and case boards.
