Ceramic Relief Portrait Roundel, Signed Haviii, Wall-Mountable
A hand-modeled ceramic relief roundel depicting a frontal female head emerging from a recessed oval field, ringed by a raised rim. The face is rendered with closed, downcast eyes and a long, narrow nose carried as a single sculpted ridge — a deliberately abstracted, near-archaic treatment that gives the portrait its meditative stillness. The clay surface carries a mottled buff-and-ochre tone with extensive incised and impressed marks across the recessed ground and rim, lending the piece a worked, excavated quality. It is incised Haviii in the lower field.
The reverse is fitted with a metal hanging armature set into the clay, confirming the piece was made to be wall-mounted. The combination of low-relief portraiture, hand-built construction, and the heavily textured surrounding field places this firmly in the studio-ceramic tradition rather than production work — a one-off sculptural object rather than a functional vessel.
CONDITION
Good to Fair with no remarkable damage. Surface shows the heavy intentional texturing and tonal variation native to the maker's technique; expect age-appropriate wear to the clay body. The reverse hanging hardware is present and intact.
