Description

Italian Figural Rooster Tureen, White Crackle Glaze with Red Comb & Wattles

A large figural earthenware tureen modeled as a standing rooster, Italian, mid-to-late 20th century. The overall white crackle glaze — an intentional decorative crazing technique, not age-related deterioration — runs across the entire body, set against a bold red glaze restricted to the comb, wattles, and beak. The lid forms the rooster's upper body, arched neck, and dramatically upswept tail feathers, lifting cleanly off a base bowl detailed with molded wing and folded feet resting on an integral oval foot.

The gallo is a fixture of Italian folk and farmhouse ceramic tradition, and this piece descends from the majolica-style decorative wares produced in quantity by Umbrian, Tuscan, and Sicilian workshops for export and home market. What separates this example from the run of production tureens is scale and modeling: at over 16 inches long, it reads as a table centerpiece rather than a shelf ornament, and the sculptural work on the crest and tail is crisper than the export-grade norm. It is a complete lidded set with good fitment — intact pairs at this size are frequently found with loss or damage. Unmarked. ⚑

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear. Scattered dark specking and a small glaze inclusion appear along the base and foot. The crackle throughout is intentional glaze crazing by design, not damage.
