Description

La Belle China Hand-Painted Cherub Two-Handled Lidded Biscuit Jar

A large lidded biscuit jar in the softened yellow-to-cream palette characteristic of La Belle China, produced by the Wheeling Pottery Company of Wheeling, West Virginia. The bulbous body carries a hand-tinted transfer of cherubs reclining among clouds — a Rococo-revival scene framed by molded scrollwork picked out in raised white slip and gilt. Two upright gilded handles flank the neck, and a domed lid rises to a sculpted gold shell finial. The base carries the La Belle China fleur-de-lis maker's mark.

La Belle wares date to the 1890s–1900s, when Wheeling Pottery aimed its decorative line at the American parlor market with soft-glaze grounds, applied gilding, and Continental-inspired figural transfers. The blush ground and swimming-cherub scene here place the piece squarely in that late-Victorian taste for the ornamental. The molded shell-and-scroll relief and the shell finial repeat the theme across body and lid.

CONDITION

Fair. Crazing throughout, consistent with the soft glaze and age. Finish wear and gilt loss to the handles and rim, with a previous repair present. A stained hairline runs through the interior. Age-appropriate wear overall.
