Kokopelli & Sun Spiral Wall Plaques, Set of 2, Great River Co. Ceramic
A pair of hand-finished terracotta wall plaques from Great River Co., Mesilla Park, New Mexico. The larger plaque carries a raised Kokopelli figure — the hump-backed flute player of Ancestral Puebloan iconography — glazed in turquoise with a purple sash, set against a rough-textured red clay ground shaped to an organic slab outline. The companion plaque frames a spiral within an eight-point sun, the turquoise coil ringed by ochre-yellow rays.
Both pieces are stamped "GREAT RIVER CO. / MESILLA PARK, NM, USA" on the reverse, and the Kokopelli edge is incised "GREAT RIVER CO © 1997"; the sun edge carries an incised maker mark and copyright as well. Each retains its integral wire hanger. The contrast of smooth glazed motif against coarse unglazed clay is deliberate, giving the set the look of carved rock-art panels lifted from the Mesilla Valley.
CONDITION
Good overall. The sun plaque shows small glaze chips to the ochre rays, exposing the red clay body beneath. Surface texture and edge roughness are original to the making, not damage. Both wire hangers are intact.
