Description

Fetish Bear, Roadrunner & Kachina Sun Face Wall Hangings, Set of 3

A trio of hand-cast ceramic wall plaques built around three of the most recognizable figures in Pueblo decorative tradition: a fetish bear carrying the classic heartline arrow motif across a turquoise body with zigzag lightning detailing; a running roadrunner rendered in raised relief with an elongated turquoise silhouette, inset cream feather spots on the tail, and articulated talons; and a kachina-style sun face crowned by a broad radiating feather headdress, with rectangular black eye bars, a downward-pointing triangle mouth, and a stepped geometric browband in terracotta and cream. All three work layered raised-relief imagery against a stippled ground in the characteristic mottled turquoise-over-terracotta finish.

Made by Great River Co. of Mesilla Park / Las Cruces, New Mexico, each piece carries the company's stamped and incised maker marks on the verso — a regional Doña Ana County studio that produced shaped animal and mask forms for the gallery and tourist trade. The bear and sun face are dated 1996; the roadrunner 1998. Each retains its original wire hanging loop.

CONDITION

Good overall. A chip is present on the rim of the roadrunner's tail. Light surface wear and minor edge irregularities consistent with hand-cast production; all three wire hangers intact.
