"Antiques & Dolls" Trade Sign on Reclaimed Pine Board
A hand-lettered wooden shop sign reading "Antiques & Dolls" in black paint over a weathered white ground, executed on a single reclaimed pine board with a natural live edge along the lower margin. The lettering mixes a serif hand for "Antiques" and "Dolls" with a flourished ampersand — the kind of freehand signwriting done by a shopkeeper rather than a commercial painter. An iron strap hinge is mounted to the top edge for hanging, and old nail holes and mounting hardware remnants remain along the lower field.
The verso shows honest scrub-board wear — scratches, knots, and residual green paint traces along the edges from an earlier life before the sign was lettered. This is a genuine piece of small-shop signage, the sort that hung outside a New England antiques dealer for decades. A 2019 purchase receipt from Blue Dog Antiques, Stafford Springs, Connecticut — invoiced as "Doll Sign" at $650 — accompanies the lot and transfers to the buyer.
CONDITION
Good, antique. Authentically rustic throughout — heavy paint loss and surface abrasion across the face consistent with outdoor use and age; the white ground has weathered to bare wood across large areas while the black lettering remains legible. Live-edge splits, old nail holes, and mounting-hardware remnants along the lower board; iron hinge shows surface rust.
