Maple Butcher Block Workbench — 84" Trestle Base, Lower Shelf
The distinction matters: this is a workbench, not a table dressed up for the role. The laminated maple butcher block top runs 84" wide and a full 3" thick — edge-glued tight-grain maple of the kind specified for professional butcher blocks, cabinetmaker's benches, and commercial prep surfaces precisely because it can be planed flat again and again without running out of material. Round through-bolts with wood-plug faces pin the top to the trestle frame; a full-length rounded upstand along the back edge keeps tools, stock, and product on the surface. The base is square-post softwood, stained a warm red-brown, with shoe feet and a full-length lower shelf at 20" — the shelf height that fits a five-gallon bucket, a flat of seedlings, or a bin of scrap stock.
The audience for this bench already knows what they're looking at. The ceramicist needs a slab surface that won't flex under a rolling pin and won't splinter into greenware. The knife-maker or bladesmith needs bench mass that absorbs mallet strikes without bouncing. The market gardener needs a potting and harvest table that can be hosed down. The serious home cook or butcher wants what restaurant prep kitchens are built around. All of them are looking at a top that sands and planes clean at this thickness — the surface staining and water rings are cosmetic on 3" maple — and a trestle that needs re-securing where the top has worked loose. The wobbly separation is structural but straightforward. What this takes in work, it returns in a bench that new would cost considerably more to build and buy.
CONDITION
Fair. The maple top carries heavy surface staining, water rings, dark spotting, and open gaps between planks. The top is unbolted from the the base and the table will need to be fastened to the top and tightened. Graded as a restoration candidate — the material mass is sound and the maple has substantial thickness remaining for resurfacing.
