Description

Chevron "Western Prints" Series Color Photo — White Sands, N.M. — Distressed

A mid-century color photolithograph from the Chevron "Collect the Set of Western Prints" promotional series, printed for free distribution at Chevron and Standard service stations across New Mexico and West Texas. The image captures a stand of blooming yucca — New Mexico's state flower — rising from the rippled gypsum dunes of White Sands National Monument, the sand's cool blue shadows offset by the golden late-day light on the plants. The caption is printed lower right in italic: White Sands National Monument, New Mexico. Housed behind glass in a two-tone distressed wood frame, white-painted with intentional paint-loss over a walnut-toned outer edge.

The reverse carries the full promotional text describing the series — eight prints "of Western scenes that are given away free at service stations displaying the Sign of the Chevron" — alongside an essay on White Sands signed by New Mexico author and novelist Frank Waters, noting the monument's proximity to Trinity Site and the White Sands Missile Range. These giveaway prints circulated through the Chevron dealer network from a June–July promotional window, making them a distinctly regional piece of borderland advertising ephemera.)

CONDITION

Good with no remarkable damage. The print is clean and bright with strong color retention. The frame carries intentional distressing — chipped white paint over walnut tone by design; distinguish this from wear. Glazing intact.
