Description

Folk Art Painted Wood Nicho Shrine with Cross Finial & Glass Side Panels

A hand-built devotional nicho, or home shrine, in the form of a peaked chapel. The deep-red painted case rises to a black-trimmed gable topped by a slender turned cross finial, flanked by two spire-like corner finials with painted chevron detailing. Freehand accents — a gilt triangle in the pediment, gilt dots, and black-and-gold diamond lozenges down the front stiles — give the piece its distinctive vernacular character. The arched front door is hinged and opens on a metal butt hinge to reveal the display interior.

Glass panels set into each side let light into the niche, while the hinged glazed front frames the devotional space. The interior floor retains a small striped serape-style textile remnant with knotted fringe — the kind of humble furnishing added by a maker to dress the shrine for a santo or holy figure. Constructed of wood throughout, unmarked, and built by hand rather than in a shop.

CONDITION

Good with no remarkable damage. Previous repair to the right finial; visible chips, scratches, and paint wear throughout consistent with age and use. A short check runs through the front board near the arch, and the interior retains an original textile remnant with loose fringe.
