Description

19th-Century Mexican Painted Pine Nicho / Devotional Wall Niche

A folk devotional nicho — a wall-mounted shrine box built to hold a santo, retablo, or small religious figure — worked in pine with a pedimented gable and flanking urn-form finials. The architectural front borrows from church façades in miniature: a triangular pediment painted with a black foliate spray and crosshatch motifs over a red ground, carried by side pilasters with traces of scrolling white decoration. The interior is a deep open recess, its back board separate from the case, with an old wire hanger fixed to the reverse. Nail-and-peg construction and hand-cut boards are consistent with rural workshop production; the piece is unmarked.

Nichos of this type were fixtures of domestic worship across Mexico and the greater borderland, home altars where a household saint stayed lit and dressed through the year. The surviving polychrome — red, teal-blue, and black over bare pine — shows the layered, weathered palette these objects earned through generations of use.

CONDITION

Good with heavy age-appropriate wear. Extensive paint loss and flaking to the polychrome throughout, exposing bare pine across the case, interior, and sides; scattered scorching, staining, and old insect/worm damage with losses to one top edge and the base molding. Both finials and the pediment remain intact; the separate back board is fitted with a wire hanger. Rustic by design and structurally sound for wall display.
