Description

Regency Mahogany Barrel-Back Tub Chair, Brass Casters, c. 1810–1840

This chair is for the decorator who knows that the most interesting room isn't the one with the most expensive pieces — it's the one with the most intentional ones. The continuous steam-bent mahogany horseshoe crest rail sweeps from shoulder to shoulder without a seam or joint, a constructional feat that separates quality period cabinetmaking from furniture that merely looks the part. Below it, reeded and turned front legs — 1¾" diameter, precisely proportioned — drop to original brass casters. Four brass disc corner mounts survive at the seat rail, a detail almost always stripped away in later restorations. The form is fauteuil en tonneau, the barrel-back tub chair: English Regency or a high-quality American interpretation, circa 1810–1840, built to pull the sitter in and hold them there.

The upholstery is a 1960s lime green floral chintz with yellow loop fringe — a period refresh that has aged into something genuinely charming. It's clean, intact, and comfortable, which means you can drop it into a bedroom corner or a reading nook and use it today. Reupholster eventually if you want something more neutral, or lean into the Regency-meets-mid-century collision — the frame is solid enough to earn either decision. The saber rear legs flare for stance; the enveloping barrel back does the work a wingchair does, without the bulk. Bedroom, library, sitting room, or the most interesting accent in an otherwise predictable living room.

CONDITION

Very Good. The mahogany frame is structurally sound; the crest rail carries age-appropriate surface scratches and finish wear consistent with long use — most concentrated along the top of the rail. All four brass disc corner mounts and the front-leg brass casters are present and secure. The 1960s upholstery is in excellent functional condition — clean, intact, and comfortable as-is.
