Sterling Silver Candlesticks by Alvin — S40 Pattern
A matched pair of Alvin Sterling weighted candlesticks with a classic flared bobeche, tapering trumpet stem, and stepped domed foot ringed with a beaded edge. The undersides carry the maker's stamp ALVIN STERLING, "CEMENT FILLED / REINFORCED WITH ROD OF OTHER METAL," and the pattern number S40. The polished silver surfaces show the graphite-toned tarnish of a piece that has sat unpolished for years.
Weighted sterling candlesticks like these were staples of American dining and formal tables through the mid-20th century, the reinforced base giving low-profile stability to hold a taper steady. Left as found — the polishing is yours to do.
CONDITION
Good. Both pieces carry heavy tarnish and surface toning throughout, with the darkening typical of long storage. Structurally sound and stable; the weighted bases are intact. We'll leave the polishing to you.
