Sterling Silver Frank M. Whiting & Co. Compote
A sterling silver footed compote by Frank M. Whiting & Co., marked on the underside "Sterling / Weighted" with pattern number 7340-1. The wide, flaring dish carries a stepped, reeded rim above a shallow bowl, raised on a knopped baluster stem and a domed, weighted circular foot. Clean lines and concentric ring detailing keep the form squarely in the mid-century American tableware tradition.
Weighted sterling holloware of this type was made for daily use — a tazza for fruit, candy, or nuts at the center of a table. The bowl and rim are solid sterling, while the base is cement-filled for stability, standard construction for compotes and candlesticks of this class. The tarnish and surface wear present are honest and expected; we'll leave the polishing to you.
CONDITION
Good. Overall tarnish and scattered surface scratching consistent with age and use, with some darkening to the recessed rings and foot. Stands level and stable; no dents or splits.
