San Francisco Music Box Co. Powell & Hyde Cable Car Wooden Music Box
A carved wooden musical cable car by The San Francisco Music Box Company, modeled on the Powell & Hyde Streets line of the San Francisco Municipal Railway. The two-tone body pairs a light natural-wood carriage with a dark-stained clerestory roof, detailed with arched window cutouts, brass-tone stanchions and grab rails, and a roof-mounted trolley finial. Applied labels read POWELL & HYDE Sts. across the destination sign, SAN FRANCISCO MUNICIPAL RY along the sill, and the green SF roundel on the panel; the end panels carry the familiar "Powell and Market / Hyde and Beach / Fisherman's Wharf" route card and the "I stop at the St. Francis" placard.
The wind-up movement plays "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," hand-noted on the underside label, and the wheels spin as it plays. The base carries the maker's oval and a "Made in Taiwan R.O.C." tag alongside the movement. A city souvenir that leans into the ritual — wind the key, set it on the shelf, and let the tune run.
CONDITION
Very Good. Tested and fully functional; wind-up movement plays and the wheels turn. No remarkable damage; light handling wear consistent with age.
