The first few notes rise the moment you lift the lid: Francis Lai's melody, rendered by a wind-up movement tucked into the hinge rail of this Ercolano jewelry box from Sorrento, Italy. It is a small thing that does an outsized job. The music arrives before you've even seen what's inside, and for a moment you are somewhere else entirely.

The hinged lid carries a hand-cut floral marquetry panel — two full-blown blossoms in graduated warm-toned woods, one gold, one amber-peach, framed by an arching scalloped heart border and articulated green foliage, all set against a swirling figured ground under a deep high-gloss lacquer. The two-compartment interior is lined in red velvet, and the box rests on four turned wood bun feet. A brass piano hinge and a side wind key complete the hardware. Ercolano's maker stamp appears on the base alongside the factory tune label reading "Love Story — Musical Movement."
