Description

Modernist Cast Bronze Elongated Figure on Terrazzo Base

A slender cast bronze figure rises from a wedge-shaped terrazzo base in this mid-century-styled abstract sculpture. The elongated form — an attenuated head and neck stretching skyward above a segmented, blade-like body — draws on the vocabulary of postwar figural abstraction, where the human silhouette is pared to gesture and line. The bronze carries a warm patina with darker recesses and lighter high points along the ridges, the surface textured from casting.

The figure is set into a trapezoidal base of black-and-gray terrazzo, the crushed aggregate reading as a dense field of dark stone against a pale binder. The piece is unmarked, with no visible foundry stamp or artist signature. The reaching, upward-thrust pose and the pairing of raw bronze with a poured composite base place it comfortably within the decorative modernist idiom of the 1960s–70s.

CONDITION

Fair. The bronze figure is intact with age-appropriate patina and casting texture. The terrazzo base is chipped, with several chips to the edges and corners of the stone.
