Mother-of-Pearl & Black Shell Inlaid Geometric Hinged Box
A hinged decorative box surfaced entirely in tessellated mother-of-pearl and black pen shell, arranged in a bold two-tone geometric composition. The lid pairs two opposing circular motifs split diagonally — each circle half pale iridescent shell, half near-black — against a field divided by a sharp diagonal band. The same composition wraps to the front panel, reading as a graphic, Art Deco-leaning play of positive and negative space. The mosaic surface catches light differently from every angle, the pale mother-of-pearl shifting through green, rose, and gold iridescence.
The interior is fitted with black velvet lining and a gilt-tone chain lid stay. The box sits on a wood substrate with chamfered lower edges, the shell tesserae applied over the entire exterior surface including the beveled base panels. A striking tabletop object suited equally to jewelry storage, small keepsakes, or sculptural desk or vanity display.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage. The natural crazing across the shell surface is characteristic of the material and inlay technique. Velvet lining is clean and intact; chain stay functions.
