Sergiev Posad Hand-Painted Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll Set, 6 Pieces
A complete six-piece set of hand-painted Russian nesting dolls, each turned from wood and finished in the lacquered style associated with Sergiev Posad, the town north of Moscow long regarded as the birthplace of the matryoshka. Each figure wears a black shawl scattered with clusters of red roses and pink blossoms over gilt lacework, the faces detailed with blue eyes, teardrop earrings, and a beaded gold headdress. The largest sits on a black-and-gold banded foot; the graduated bodies nest down to a thumb-sized final doll.
The base carries a painted Cyrillic inscription reading "Сергиев Посад" (Sergiev Posad), the maker's town mark, confirming origin. The floral bouquet motif and warm coral-to-black palette are characteristic of the region's decorative tradition, where each doll is painted freehand before sealing under clear lacquer. A tidy, well-executed set that opens and closes cleanly through all six graduations.
