Pair of Cast Iron Rococo Revival Easel Frames — Mirror & Photo, Late 19th C.

A matched pair of late-19th to early-20th century cast iron easel frames in the Rococo Revival taste, both worked in the same vocabulary of open scrolling acanthus, foliate spandrels, and a plumed leaf crest. One retains its beveled mirror plate within a beaded-and-gadrooned inner border; the other holds its original marbled backing board behind a beaded aperture, configured as a photo frame. Each is dressed in a warm gilt finish over the iron, with pierced scrollwork that reads as light and airy despite the weight of the metal.

Both frames carry cast foundry marks — a raised 118 to one, and S845 (or 8845) and 593 to the other — consistent with the American cast iron easel frames produced in quantity around the turn of the century for parlor and desktop display. Each converts between freestanding easel and wall hanging via a hinged back strut and wire hangers. The mirror frame stands upright; the photo frame retains its kickstand and backing.

CONDITION

The mirror frame grades Good and displays well, with age-appropriate gilt loss, surface toning, and scattered darkening to the recessed areas. The photo frame grades Poor: the bottom scrollwork section is missing and the back is absent, though the crest and side scrolls remain intact. Both show wear and patina consistent with age and use throughout.
